Day 57 Advise From the Heart by Dalai Lama: When some people complain that nobody has any respect any more, whereas in less industrialized countries people generally behave more responsibly, they should be careful to qualify such a statement. The Indian regions in the Himalayas, for example, are quite inaccessible and are relatively free from the effects of modern technology. It is a fact that there are very few burglaries or murders there and that people are content with what they have. There are even some places where it is traditional to leave ones door open when one goes out, so that any visitors can make themselves at home and refresh themselves as they wait for their host to return. By contract, in large cities like Delhi there is a lot of crime; people are are never happy with their lot and this creates innumerable problems. But in my view, we are wrong to use this as a pretext for deciding that economic development is undesirable and that we should put the clock back.
