Day 6 Bagan (20 November 2014) posted 4 minutes ago by Werner Paetzold This is always a sad day for us as we say goodbye to the ebullient and spirited students at Basis Primary School. Despite the lachrymose moments, there was joy and laughter and the very real invitation and promise of a return. We have established a tradition of running a mini-Olympics sports day on the last day at the school followed by a short singing and dancing performance to end our time together. All of the games for the Olympics were devised by your children and made good use of local materials such as sand-filled water battles as pins for ten pin bowling. One of the games that was enthusiastically received was the flip flop slip: students had to slip one foot into a rubber flip flop and then attempt to send it the furthest distance by means of a vigorous kick. As you can imagine, there was much hilarity involved. A day in the sun guiding 400 students (grades 1-7) through activities in the heat was a steep learning curve for your children but they consistently demonstrated leadership and initiative balanced with a hearty sense of good humour. We broke for lunch as usual but this time our return to the school was welcomed even more rapturously: as we walked back from the local restaurant, the primary school students swarmed out of their school grounds to lead us in by hand. It is a humbling experience to be treated with so much adulation for so little cause. We are determined to earn at least a fraction of that respect. We make our farewells of this enchanting place determined to continue our important relationship and to prepare for an even more meaningful experience next year. Tomorrow morning we have an early flight for Yangon with a leisurely day until we leave late at night for Hong Kong and home. Thank you for entrusting your extraordinary children to our care for these few magical days.
