Day 6 Led Zeppelin Challenge. I was tagged by Ayan Tolentino to post 7 Led Zeppelin songs in 7 days. Ill change mine a bit. Ill post 7 original songs that were allegedly ripped off by Led Zeppelin instead. Day 6. One more to go. This is Howlin Wolfs Killing Floor, an electric blues classic from 1964 which has been inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. The tune is so popular with blues fans, even Jimi Hendrix covered this live early on (but unfortunately, never recorded it in the studio.) Led Zeppelin covered this song live on their 68-69 tour and introduced it properly as Howlin Wolfs Killing Floor but evolved it as The Lemon Song for their album Led Zeppelin II. The liner credits the song solely to Led Zeppelin although its obviously an embellished cover of Howlin Wolfs classic. Howlin Wolfs publisher sued Led Zeppelin in 1972 and again, settled out of court. Subsequent pressings now include Chester Burnett (Howlin Wolf) as co-writer with Led Zeppelin. This reveals a lot about early Led Zeppelin. My theory is that all these uncredited songs are honest tributes to the originals they love and they played them live all the time. Due to a combination of shortage of original material for their early albums and time pressure, they decided fill the gaps with songs with what they know best, the covers they play live. I feel Page nor Plant didnt have any malicious intent but it was probably their managers brilliant idea not to credit the original writers for business and profit purposes. Thats just my theory. No credible sources whatsoever. Anyway, heres Howlin Wolfs Killing Floor, the song that inspired Led Zeppelins The Lemon Song.
