Day 6 of being thankful: This is a strange way of starting our my thankful post but it gets me to the subject of my post. July 26, 1971, my grandmother Lena took my brothers, Del Ray 8 and Deon 6, to pick figs at Sherry Reechs parents house. It was just a few miles down the road and I stayed at home while Daddy and Paw Paw were just across the road working on a tractor. On the trip home they were involved in a one car accident and neither of the little boys survived. My family and the entire community were brought to their knees by the loss of my brothers. Maw Maw suffered injuries but recovered with time. It is and was sad but a few months later my mom discovered she was pregnant. My sister, Julie Pecanty Perry, was born one year and twelve days after that fatal crash. The birth of that little red faced baby girl brought a smile to the faces of everyone who knew of our tragedy. She was the center of attention for my family and several neighbors up and down the road. Before she was born I would leave for school to the sound of my moms sobs and come home to the same sad tones. After her birth I couldnt wait to get home and see what new sounds she could make and spent hours with mom and dad trying to get a giggle out of her. Neighbors, like Kathy Tiffee Formans, Renee Robertsons, Cheryl Thompson Fontaines and other community parents, would call and ask if they could take her town for the day or just come over to look at her. She would come home with a new wardrobe, lollipops and toys, and they would have a smile on their faces. She was pure and sweet and made everyone forget to be sad. Her play clothes were Martha Miniature dresses from Doris Dress Shop, with the signature jingle bell sewn into the petticoats. She desired to have long hair more than any thing in the whole world and to simulate the hair she wore a pair of blue infant pants with elastic in the waist on her head for about 18 months. Imagine me, 12 years older in high school, and this little 3 year old girl, dressed in an expensive yellow dress that jingled when she moved, running down the hallway at my school, her blue pants-hair blowing in the breeze, yelling SItty Roo Sitty Roo, at the top of her lungs. NO problem, it was the baby that breathed life back into my home. Years have flown by and we grew up, many things have come to pass and our lives have changed dramatically several times, but Julie Pecanty Perry still like to jingle when she moves, wear frilly dresses and demands all eyes focused on her when she enters a room. Julie Pecanty Perry your childhood may have had some rough patches, but during your younger years you were just as magical as Tinker Bell. You were and still are loved by many. I am thankful for my little sister. She is the title holder of the award for the most spoiled child in Acme (1972 - 1977), but she deserved it. PS - Please stop wearing those frilly dresses with bells, you are 40 plus years old now. LOL!
