Day #60 – Cultural Differences Dying, death and grief differ among cultures. The beliefs, rituals and customs have diverse meaning across different groups of people. Traditions surrounding the death, funeral and grieving among Latino, African American, Creek, Cherokee, Jewish and Christians vary based on culture. Within these groups, observation of religious or cultural practices may vary based on an individual’s belief. For example: The Jewish religion does not recognize cremation as a ritual yet many individuals choose to cremate for a variety of reasons. Discussion of cultural differences is important to help us be more tolerant of those around us who are grieving. Some cultures visit with the deceased family before the funeral while others wait until after the burial. Other cultures believe once the body has been buried it is time to “get-over” the loss. Rituals vary amongst cultural groups creating diverse ceremonies including the burial, prayers, an open or closed casket, lighting of candles, nourishment, celebration ceremonies, eulogies and other observances. Understanding how others grieve is helpful in your own grief. Open-mindedness allows us to learn and accept different views. Spend time researching customs and cultures of your religion and nationality. You will find it useful when looking for answers of what to expect during your journey.
