Day 69: Our city is perfect (on the outside). Hong Kongs first permanent harbor-front Ferris wheel, unimaginably named the HK Observation Wheel, finally opened for business today after months of delay. At 60 meters high, this blue perfection is our answer to the London Eye and the Singapore Flyer. It also confirms the citys status as a paradise for tourists and a playground for expats. But did anyone tell you that the Admiralty protest site, where a handful of students are still hunger-stiking for democracy, is only a half-minute walk from the giant wheel? With all those neon lights and skyscrapers, its easy to forget the ugliness hidden behind the paradise and swept under the playground. On an unrelated note, Super Typhoon Hagupit is expected to hit the Philippines tomorrow. My prayers are with the Philippine people.
