Day 7 of Thankfulness: I am thankful for clean water! In - TopicsExpress

Day 7 of Thankfulness: I am thankful for clean water! In anticipation of being able to have the pleasure of taking Mario E. Rivas Castillo to the Mall and a few other shops in Wilmington today, I was thinking of the majority of people of Nicaragua who do not always have access to clean water. I think nothing of being able to turn on any spigot in our house, yard and yes, out on our dock and expecting clean potable water. We Americans are blessed and should be thankful to have clean water available to us 24/7. Most of my Nicaraguan friends have to walk a great distance to draw and carry their water to their homes. This can some days require more than one trip to get enough water to last for a day. And more likely than not, the well is contaminated which can cause sickness and in a large number of cases, even death can occur. I am also thankful that we are in a small way helping these people by providing them with a type of water purifier basically made of clay. We purchase these pots at a cost of somewhere in the neighborhood of a mere $25 each. The 2014 team of Missionary Friends (going to Nicaragua on 2/15/14) have pledged to place 200 of these purifiers in homes. There are literally whole families who die from drinking bad water. Small teams plan to set up 50 per day which will entail instructing each family how to use the filtering pots. With proper use of the pots, each pot will last somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 years! How amazing is that? A $25 item can save Lord only knows how many lives. Praise God! Once again, I am thankful for such a simple thing as turning on the tap, and getting good clean water to drink, to cook with, to wash dishes and clothes with, to flush toilets with, to water grass with, to wash our cars with ... what have I left out? Truly thankful for water! (And I just HAD to take the liberty of talking about the mission team once again!) PS ... I am not going to be able to go on the 2014 trip but am still active with the team and supporting them in any way possible.
