Day 70 - Book launch of《The Queen of Statue Square: New Short - TopicsExpress

Day 70 - Book launch of《The Queen of Statue Square: New Short Fiction from Hong Kong》 I was one of the eight authors featured in this new collection of stories -- one of the eight who explore[s] the questions of what it means to be in, from, and of the Hong Kong of the past, the present, and the future. Recent events in the city have made the release of this anthology more timely than ever. Earlier this evening, we had a launch party in LKF where writers read excerpts from their stories and catch up over wine. Expectedly, the Umbrella Movement figured prominently in conversations and Im proud to say that writers are generally a liberal and socially progressive bunch. Warm thanks to Marshall Moore and Xu Xi for co-editing the anthology and organizing the launch. And now, a quick update: 1. 黃之鋒 Joshua ended his hunger strike after 110 hours. There is something romantic but incredibly depressing about ONE boy hurting himself to demand basic political rights for ALL. But it is exactly where we are. 2. Zhou Yong-kang 周永康, Chinas former security czar and politburo member, has been stripped of his party membership and will face prosecution. This confirms that factional in-fighting at the very top has reached a fever pitch and explains why Xi Jin-pings leadership has so little patience for the students follies in Hong Kong.
