Day +76 (24 more days until the big 100!) Pierce is doing - TopicsExpress

Day +76 (24 more days until the big 100!) Pierce is doing really well. He looks good and feels good (and his hair continues to grow). :-) We headed over to UVA on Monday for his weekly checkup with Dr Dunsmore. His numbers are holding strong. WBC 3.5 RBC 3.94 Hemoglobin 11.5 Platelets 81 We need to keep pushing him to drink his water to keep his BUN and creatinine levels down but hes trying. The important thing about those numbers and drinking water is to take care of his kidneys. Cyclosporine collects in the kidneys. He has to flush it out or risk damaging them. One really good piece of news was that we can go back to checking his cyclosporine level via his central line instead of a peripheral stick. He doesnt mind the needles thankfully but he certainly is not going to miss getting stuck every Monday. Pierces days are pretty calm and uneventful. He plays with the dog, shoots basketball, kicks around the soccer ball, drives his RC truck, watches TV and works at the constant chore of cleaning his room. Pierce had a play date on Sunday with his best friend, Justin, and couldnt have been happier! Hes bummed he wont be able to start school with everyone else next Tuesday but, hopefully, it will only be for a month or two. Looking ahead, Pierce and Mom will head back down to Duke the end of August or beginning of September. Were waiting for the appointments to be scheduled. Theyll run Pierce through all the tests again and check his immune system. If Dr Martin likes where his immune system is, he may release Pierce to start running cross country and later add back in soccer. Then, some time after that all happens, he may be able to start back to school! All of these things are possibilities but not definites. It all depends on the numbers. The typical timing for rejoining real life is 6 months (November 29). So any date before then would be awesome! At some point in the beginning of September, Pierce will have his central line removed at UVA. Again, no date has been set yet; just a general timeframe.
