Day #76 – Can I still talk about my loved one who passed? Yes. Yes. Yes. And everyone around you will or should listen. Many of us talk about our grandparents who passed away years ago reminiscing about their cooking or sharing stories with great grandchildren so they have a chance to learn about their great grandparents. If a father passes away when his child is young, the mother should share his characteristics and qualities with the child. If a child losses a brother, why not go through life knowing what he was like prior to his passing -- did he like the same things as me? Was he a good baby? For some, the notion of talking about your loved one could mean the griever is “not over” the loss or is in a “bad way”. Actually, talking about a loved one is soothing, comforting and a peaceful way of sharing the loss with others. For those who are concerned about hearing the deceased’s name too much – start by determining if you are being too sensitive or if the griever is regularly talking about the person. If it is the latter, consider asking the griever carefully how they are and help them explore their emotions.
