Day 8 of #PTTW9 DAY EIGHT IRAN, MIDDLE EAST A United Nations report by U.N. Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran Ahmed Shaheed reveals that “at least 49 Christians” are imprisoned in Iran “as of January 2014.” Shaheed says, “Most prosecuted Christians appear to be converts from Muslim backgrounds or those that proselytize or minister to Iranian Muslims. Iranian authorities at the highest levels have designated house churches and evangelical Christians as threats to national security.” Despite the threat of persecution, however, Christianity is growing among Iranian Muslims. Praise God for the growth of the Iranian Church! Pray for religious freedom in Iran. Pray for the Iranian government to release all imprisoned Believers (The Bible, Psalm 102:19-20). BURKINA FASO, WEST AFRICA Although Burkina Faso’s government is attempting to fight child malnutrition, much work remains to be done. According to IRIN, “Chronic malnutrition remains above emergency threshold levels, particularly in rural areas, a situation that will be resolved only if the government and its partners step up prevention efforts. One in five children under age five is stunted in Burkina Faso’s urban areas, while in rural areas the number jumps to one in three. Access to health services is far more limited in rural areas, and awareness of children’s nutritional needs is lower.” According to UNICEF nutrition expert Sylvestre Tapsoba, “More needs to be done to improve exclusive breastfeeding for infants in these regions and to improve household hygiene practices and access to clean water and sanitation.” Pray for an end to food scarcity and child malnutrition in Burkina Faso. Pray for the government to work harder at preventing malnutrition, educating families about the importance of good hygiene, and providing access to sanitation and pure water. Pray for Christian workers and relief agencies to serve the many families struggling with hunger (The Bible, Matthew 25:35).
