Day Four – We woke early in Page Arizona and ate complimentary continental breakfast in the lobby of the Best Western. It’s attached to an Indian restaurant. The blueberry muffins tasted a little like curry. We then rode in the back of a pickup truck to Antelope Canyon on a Navajo reservation. They are slot canyons – very thin slivers in the desert surface that periodically flood – carving beautiful cave walls with light just peeking in through the top. It was gorgeous. In the afternoon, we rode to the bottom of the Glen Canyon Dam (it’s like the Hoover Dam – only smaller). We rafted down the Colorado River for about seven miles. The water is a constant 47 degrees. It made a refreshing splash, but when we stopped to look at petroglyphs we went in the water up to our knees. Brendan and Ryan went in over their heads. Ouch. Looking at a canyon from the bottom is completely different – even if it’s not the Grand Canyon it’s still inspiring. After the rafting we went to Pizza Hut (Ryan’s choice) to celebrate his eighth birthday. On full stomachs, we drove to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Again, because of road closures we didn’t reach the National Park until after dark. We pulled over and turned out the lights. Having ascended several thousand feet and having the sun go down the temperature went from the mid-90s to exactly 60 degrees. We saw so many stars we’d never seen before. It was like looking at a Christmas tree with a little less color. Back in the Chevy Suburban and down the road to our hotel. We almost killed an Elk. It was just walking across the road in the middle of the park and never gave us a second look. Ironically, it walked passed an Elk crossing sign. It was huge and we were going about 40 MPH and just missed it. Arrived at the Red Feather lodge just outside the south gates just before 10 p.m. Nice hotel – quite a contrast from the previous night.
