Day Twenty-One of the Eileen McCreary Nuss Music Memorial. More Southern Rock and Roll today. Lynyrd Skynyrd – From the 1976 Live Album “One More From the Road” recorded in Atlanta Georgia south of the Mason Dixon Line –“OH, Atlanta---that’s the way it’s supposed to be”. So Eileen and I were at the Shore (as we call it back East) in Fenwick Island Delaware with family. I wanted to go Cruising to check out the “sights” in nearby Ocean City Maryland, but had a slight problem. Eileen drove a really cool blue Jeep and in the summer it was sans, roof and doors. I on the other hand had a 1973 Toyota Corolla. They say a picture says a thousand words but I don’t have one handy so hopefully this description will paint a picture for you. This car was purchased for USD 300.00 to get me places and that it did. A lot of people name their car – this car was affectionately, “The Rattlebox”. And let’s say it this way, if the road was smooth, so was the ride in “The Rattlebox”. It had a standard transmission, the clutch was spongy AND on a good day it had three gears, if you didn’t include reverse. If you measured this vehicle it on “Return on Investment” this was a great car—but not for Cruising. And, believe me, I didn’t have to worry if you dated me for my car! It had an AM radio but I put a nice stereo inside the glove box, a nice safety feature to boot and upgraded the speakers. For East Coast summers it had three AWESOME features: Number 3- Pleather, that is, black vinyl interior Number 2- No air conditioner AND Number 1- The heat, in this is baby, was always ON, all year round. So in the hot, humid summer, you would hand crank the windows down and I stuffed socks in the heat vents. Always sympathetic to the core, Eileen loaned me the Jeep. I was only one mile from Ocean City Maryland and popped the clutch and popped in the cassette. Now I don’t like live albums generally but this is one of my all-time favorites and features THE iconic eleven plus minute version of “FreeBird”. Queued up for me was “Call Me The Breeze” and there I was just blowing down the road…and the song end: Oooh Mr. Breeze! https://youtube/watch?v=RK_p8M5Rtek
