Day of the Arab Riot in South Shields Most of us know about it but what happened. It was sparked off by 2 ships taking on white rather than coloured crew. The Arabs formed a cordon to prevent men signing on. The police drew batons to protect the seamen and charged the mob. The Arabs retaliated using their sticks and knives. The crowd dispersed leaving the road strewn with men felled in the baton charge. Three policemen were taken to the Ingham with stab wounds and 20 Arabs were arrested.
