Day two of the challenge set by Matt Welch to name my favourite 5 - TopicsExpress

Day two of the challenge set by Matt Welch to name my favourite 5 top songs, which is impossible, todays choice is more for the style of music than the song. In the late sixties we used to get out of school at lunchtime and go to Pops Cafe in Shacklewell Lane, Dalston, where he had a jukebox that was stuffed with the latest releases from Jamaica. This started a love affair with reggae that has been such an influence on music since. I could have played so many different songs here from The Maytals, The Wailers, Desmond Dekker, Bob and Marcia, Nora Dean, The Pioneers, Yellowman, the list is endless, so it was hard to pick one artist, let alone one song. Ive gone for Prince Buster and Wreck a Pum Pum as it wasnt just the sound of the reggae beat that drew us to it, but the disgusting titles and lyrics that came with it. With the BBC banning songs all over the place it was brilliant, Max Romeos Wet Dream was the most successful to feel the wrath of the BBC censor, but I dont think that anyone in the BBC ever heard this song anyway. Even 45 years on I dont think this would pass the BBC litmus test. Todays nominee is Gary Conway - Good Luck, this is a nightmare.
