Day two of three things to be grateful for. Dogs: 1. Kali. I inherited her with Meggan. I became her chief walker and feeder - a big hearted lab kelpie cross with a tennis ball chewing addiction. Our only point of conflict was who got to sit in the passenger seat next to Meggan! ;-) 2. Bear. A little bitsy thingy (with a fair dose of terrier). We chose her from the pound to be a companion for Kali. Her dietary habits were interesting to say the least. Her previous owners must have been very abusive, because for the first couple of years she would roll over and cower whenever we came near. In the last few years of our time with her she could walk amongst her new family with her head held high. Towards the end of our time living in Tennant Creek she pointed her nose into a little box of junk round the side of the house. She was rigid and wouldnt leave until we came - she had found a juvenile King Brown snake - 4 minutes to live if bitten - none of us could have got to the hospital in time (Abbey was only five and would have had less time). The Parks and Wildlife person was having their first day in the job and was too timid to deal with it, so I had to. One of my saddest memories. Shortly after, we moved to far North Queensland, and bear became the family pet of the Tennant Creek goverment vet....it would have taken too long to find a place to rent with two dogs. Bear would have spent her last days/years bolting after wildlife on the broad plains of the outback. Ironically, she would probably have ended up by being bitten by a snake. 3. Rufus. A one off miniature poodle. My companion at the end of the bed during those days of constant migraines in the years following my breakdown. Typical of his breed, he was VERY smart - he could play soccer with us without being taught. Sadly he died of organ failure after eating too many avocados in Meggans garden. All three have been an amazing enrichment, and cherished family members.
