Days of Bleeding That Exceed 10 Days and Do Not Coincide with a Woman’s Previous Menstrual Period Rule: If a woman who has a certain length of time for menstruation bleeds the next time for more than 10 days, she is considered to have istihada (non-menstrual bleeding; flux of blood from a woman other than menses and postnatal bleeding). That is, it means that there are days that are not considered menstrual though there is bleeding. When a woman bleeds for more than 10 days, she must refer to her previous menstrual period to see whether her current days of bleeding coincide with her previous menstrual period. If 3 or more days of bleeding do not coincide with her previous menstrual days, that is, if 2 days at most or no day at all coincides with her previous menstrual days, then the length of her habit is considered menstruation, and all the remaining days of bleeding are considered istihada. For example, if a woman whose usual menstrual period is 7 days bleeds for 12 days this month, of the 12 days of bleeding, the first 7 days are considered menstrual bleeding, and the remainder is considered istihada. She must resume performing salat upon the completion of 10 days. She must make up the salats that she missed during the days of istihada. If bleeding lasts for more than 10 days and its 3 or more days coincide with her previous menstrual days, then only the days that coincide with her previous menstrual period are considered menstrual bleeding, and all the remaining days are considered istihada. Examples: 1. A woman’s habit is 28 days of purity and 6 days of menstruation. If she remains free from menstruation for 16 days and then bleeds for 11 days, it means that there is istihada this month as bleeding has exceeded 10 days. Because the days of bleeding of this month do not coincide with her previous menstrual period, the length of her habit, which is the first 6 of 11 days, is considered menstrual bleeding, and the remaining days are considered istihada. Her purity period has decreased to 16 days. 2. A woman’s habit is 28 days of purity and 6 days of menstruation. If she remains free from menstruation for 16 days and then bleeds for 12 days, it means that there is istihada this month as bleeding has exceeded 10 days. Because the days of bleeding of this month do not coincide with her previous menstrual period, the length of her habit, which is the first 6 of 12 days, is considered menstrual bleeding, and the remaining days are considered istihada. Her purity period has decreased to 16 days. 3. A woman’s habit is 28 days of purity and 6 days of menstruation. If she remains free from menstruation for 17 days and then bleeds for 12 days, it means that there is istihada this month as bleeding has exceeded 10 days. Because only 1 day [not 3 or more days] of this month’s bleeding coincides with her previous menstrual period, the length of her habit, which is the first 6 of 12 days, is considered menstrual bleeding, and the remaining days are considered istihada. Her purity period has decreased to 17 days. 4. A woman’s habit is 28 days of purity and 6 days of menstruation. If she remains free from menstruation for 16 days and then sees blood for 14 days, it means that there is istihada this month as bleeding has exceeded 10 days. Because only 2 days [not 3 or more days] of this month’s bleeding coincide with her previous menstrual period, the length of her habit, which is the first 6 of 14 days, is considered menstruation, and the remaining days are considered istihada. Her purity period has decreased to 16 days. 5. A woman’s habit is 28 days of purity and 6 days of menstruation. If she remains free from menstruation for 19 days and then sees blood for 11 days, it means that there is istihada this month as bleeding has exceeded 10 days. Because only 2 days [not three or more days] of this month’s bleeding coincide with her previous menstrual period, the length of her habit, which is the first 6 of 11 days, is considered menstruation, and the remaining days are considered istihada. Her purity period has decreased to 19 days. 6. A woman’s habit is 20 days of purity and 4 days of menstruation. If she remains free from menstruation for 30 days and then sees bleeding for 15 days, it means that there is istihada this month as bleeding has exceeded 10 days. Because none of the days of bleeding of this month coincides with her previous menstrual period, the length of her habit, which is the first 4 of 15 days, is considered menstruation, and the remaining days are considered istihada. Her purity period has increased to 30 days. 7. A woman’s habit is 20 days of purity and 4 days of menstruation. If she remains free from menstruation for 26 days and then sees bleeding for 11 days, it means that there is istihada this month as bleeding has exceeded 10 days. Because none of the days of bleeding of this month coincides with her previous menstrual period, the length of her habit, which is the first 4 of 11days, is considered menstruation, and the remaining days are considered istihada. Her purity period has increased to 26 days. 8. A woman’s habit is 20 days of purity and 4 days of menstruation. If she remains free from menstruation for 24 days and then sees bleeding for 20 days, it means that there is istihada this month as bleeding has exceeded 10 days. Because none of the days of bleeding of this month coincides with her previous menstrual period, the length of her habit, which is the first 4 of 20 days, is considered menstruation, and the remaining days are considered istihada. Her purity period has increased to 24 days. 9. A woman’s habit is 20 days of purity and 4 days of menstruation. If she remains free from menstruation for 23 days and then sees bleeding for 17 days, it means that there is istihada this month as bleeding has exceeded 10 days. Because only 1 day [not 3 or more days] of bleeding of this month coincides with her previous menstrual period, the length of her habit, which is the first 4 of 17 days, is considered menstruation, and the remaining days are considered istihada. Her purity period has increased to 23 days. 10. A woman’s habit is 20 days of purity and 4 days of menstruation. If she remains free from menstruation for 22 days and then sees bleeding for 12 days, it means that there is istihada this month as bleeding has exceeded 10 days. Because only 2 days [not 3 or more days] of bleeding of this month coincide with her previous menstrual period, the length of her habit, which is the first 4 of 12 days, is considered menstruation, and the remaining days are considered istihada. Her purity period has increased to 22 days.
