Days of Heaven (1978) w Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, Sam Shephard. On the MOVIES Channel. The young girls (who sounds like a boy) narration is hard to follow. Set in 1916, 3 poverty sticken young people - Gere, Adams & a young girl - flee the Chicago slums for the Texas Panhandle after Gere murders his steel mill boss. Although Gere & Adams are lovers, they pretent to be sisters & brother. As migrant workers, they work the Texas wheat fields where the wealthy, shy owner (Sam Shephard) falls in love with Adams. As hes terminally ill, the amoral Gere encourages Adams to accept his proposal. Although the owner is good to all 3, inviting them into his home, Gere gets pissed when he doesnt die & resumes his affair with Adams. Eventually Gere murders the husband & the 3 flee. The TX Rangers catch up with him & manage to kill him as hes going after them with a rifle. The souless wife, who gets the money, dumps the young girl in a boarding school, prior to jumping on a train loaded with soldiers heading for WWI. Apparently set to resume her whoring ways. The kid escapes from the school, taking off with another older girl whom she knew from prior days, whos just been dumped by her soldier boyfriend, heading off on that train, but is too stupid to realize it. Off they go with no money & no future. I found this movie a complete waste of time, the 2 main characters having no redeeming value of any kind. Best part was when the rangers shot Gere dead in the river. Sam Shephard is very touching as the good hearted, generous farm owner. Also the grief striken, older farm foreman, who is determined to avenge his death.
