De Jager on song at IGT Silver Lakes Photo – Louis de Jager; credit CJ du Plooy PRETORIA, 25 March 2014 – Louis de Jager made light of the penal rough at Silver Lakes Country Club to launch to a two shot lead in the second round of the IGT Series Silver Lakes on Tuesday. The 26-year-old Pretoria golfer moved into pole position with an array of iron shots that left his playing partners in awe and landed him a bogey-free six-under-par 66. The former Suncoast Classic champion holds sway at eight under 136, two clear of Gideon Pienaar and three ahead of joint first round leader, Juan Langeveld Pienaar, a former IGT Tour winner, carded a successive 69 courtesy of an eagle-three at the 18th, three birdies and two bogeys, while Langeveld battled to an even-par 72. Mike Maile (69), Robbie Lupine (70) and CJ du Plessis (67) share fourth on four under with Huyn Park from Korea, who lost his grip on the overnight lead with a second round 73. Former Africa Open champion Shaun Norris improved seven shots on his opening 74 to finish in eighth on three under. De Jager got his rally going with a string of three birdies from the par-three third and added a fourth at the par-five sixth to turn in 32. “I made solid pars on the back nine, but managed to pick up another pair of birdies at the 14th and 15th for my 66,” the Els Club Copperleaf professional said. “It was a solid round and this is the kind of form I need for the Telkom PGA Championship next week. I’m really pleased that I didn’t drop a single shot out there, given how tough the rough is. It’s the perfect kind of course to get match ready for the Sunshine Tour.” De Jager finished the 2013 season ranked seventh on the Sunshine Tour and earned nearly R1.4-million in 14 starts. He banked R156,000 for a joint 31st finish at the season-opening Joburg Open in February, and boosted his bank balance with cheques at the Dimension Data Pro-Am and Tshwane Open. De Jager said it is not the prize money that draws the professionals to compete on the IGT Tour, but rather the chance to stay competitive and keep the rust off. “We have basically had four weeks of after the Tshwane Open and you need to stay competitive,” he said. “The IGT Tour events are well run, the course set-ups are tough and the competition is at a high standard.
