The 26-year-old Pretoria golfer moved into pole position with an array of iron shots that left his playing partners in awe and landed him a bogey-free six-under-par 66. The former Suncoast Classic champion holds sway at eight under 136, two clear of Gideon Pienaar and three ahead of joint first round leader, Juan Langeveld Pienaar, a former IGT Tour winner, carded a successive 69 courtesy of an eagle-three at the 18th, three birdies and two bogeys, while Langeveld battled to an even-par 72. Mike Maile (69), Robbie Lupine (70) and CJ du Plessis (67) share fourth on four under with Huyn Park from Korea, who lost his grip on the overnight lead with a second round 73. Former Africa Open champion Shaun Norris improved seven shots on his opening 74 to finish in eighth on three under. De Jager got his rally going with a string of three birdies from the par-three third and added a fourth at the par-five sixth to turn in 32. “I made solid pars on the back nine, but managed to pick up another pair of birdies at the 14th and 15th for my 66,” the Els Club Copperleaf professional said. “It was a solid round and this is the kind of form I need for the Telkom PGA Championship next week. I’m really pleased that I didn’t drop a single shot out there, given how tough the rough is. It’s the perfect kind of course to get match ready for the Sunshine Tour.” De Jager finished the 2013 season ranked seventh on the Sunshine Tour and earned nearly R1.4-million in 14 starts. He banked R156,000 for a joint 31st finish at the season-opening Joburg Open in February, and boosted his bank balance with cheques at the Dimension Data Pro-Am and Tshwane Open. De Jager said it is not the prize money that draws the professionals to compete on the IGT Tour, but rather the chance to stay competitive and keep the rust off. “We have basically had four weeks of after the Tshwane Open and you need to stay competitive,” he said. “The IGT Tour events are well run, the course set-ups are tough and the competition is at a high standard. That’s what we come looking for to stay sharp and keep our games in form for the next event. “I’d love to walk away with a win here this week, and take that confidence to the Country Club Johannesburg next week.” SECOND ROUND SCORES 136 - Louis De Jager 70 66 138 - Gideon Pienaar 69 69 139 - Juan Langeveld 67 72 140 - Mike Maile 71 69, Roberto Lupini 70 70, CJ du Plessis 73 67, Hyun Park KOR 67 73 141 - Shaun Norris 74 67 142 - Neil Cheetham ENG 73 69, Louis Calitz 70 72, Ted Hendriks 70 72, Wynand Dingle 70 72 143 - Ryan Tipping 72 71, Jonathan Waschefort 75 68 144 - Lean Boezaart 71 73, Andrew Light 71 73, Otto van Greunen 71 73 145 - Leon Scheepers (AMA) 74 71, Rourke Van der Spuy 78 67, Brandon Taylor USA 74 71, Duane Keun 72 73 146 - Tertius Van Den Berg 68 78 147 - Paul De Beer 73 74, Brett Liddle 72 75, Maritz Wessels 77 70, Cilliers Naude 72 75 148 - Danie Pretorius 72 76, Fouche Botha (AMA) 72 76, Werner Van Niekerk 77 71, Toto Thimba Jnr 75 73, Herman Minnie 76 72 149 - Frans Strydom 74 75, Allan Versfeld 78 71, David Lamprecht (AMA) 79 70, Arthur Horne SWZ 76 73 150 - Ruan Huysamen NAM 76 74, Ockert Strydom 79 71, Bryandrew Roelofsz 74 76, Dwayne Coetzee 74 76 151 - Calvin Caldeira (AMA) 78 73, Romano Saincic 79 72, MJ Viljoen 77 74 Missed the cut:- 152 - Reghard Neethling (AMA) 72 80 153 - Teagan Moore (AMA) 77 76, Johan de Beer 81 72, Pieter Van der Linde (AMA) 76 77, Christiaan Pretorius 81 72 154 - Pieter Kruger 77 77, Jacques Prinsloo 75 79, Will Mathews USA 73 81, Anton Steenkamp (AMA) 80 74 155 - Jacqui Akers (AMA) 78 77, Wayne du Toit 76 79 156 - Carlos Arroyo (AMA) 81 75 157 - Johan Smit (AMA) 78 79, Robert Herselman (AMA) 80 77 158 - Stephan De Beer (AMA) 83 75, TJ Bekker 80 78 159 - Conway Kunneke 81 78 161 - Ruwan Combrink 81 80 162 - Matthew Vogel 78 84 164 - David Riddle 81 83 169 - Jerry Steyn 86 83, Julian de Wet (AMA) 88 81
