DeLeo touring UMass’ new Springfield center SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo is in Springfield to get a first-hand look at the new UMass satellite center downtown. The center, which fully opened in September, is the first of its kind in the UMass System. While not a full campus like those in Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth, and Lowell, students may attend classes in a variety of fields at the Tower Square location. It also offers programs in conjunction with other local schools, such as Holyoke Community College and Springfield Technical Community College. In addition to getting a look at the facility, DeLeo’s tour is part of an effort to highlight the work between the Legislature, the UMass System, and the state’s community colleges to provide greater job and educational opportunities to all parts of the state. Accompanying DeLeo on the tour through the UMass Center at Springfield are UMass President Robert Caret, UMass Amherst Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy, and William Davila, the director of operations for the center.
