DeSoto Park in Manatee County recognizes the Spanish explorers and the native people they encountered during the exploration of Florida. ....Hadnt been there in over 15 years, but a lot of the commentary on the trail markers has changed from celebrating DeSoto as an explorer to explaining how he decimated the natives....... Funny thing is they skipped a lot of info about the area, .....from its history during the War of Northern Aggression as a hideout, the cattle shipping dock at Shaws point where cattle were waded out and and loaded on boats to Cuba..........oh, and how in the 50s and 60s they destroyed the middens and the Indian burial grounds to mine the shell for roads....hmmm.
