Dead Simple - Play at The Orchard Theatre. Review by Annabelle Jain. Well we didnt get Tesco first, or at all in fact in Dartford, but we did get this brilliant play first at our fantastic theatre! Following the critically acclaimed hit stage production of Peter James’ The Perfect Murder earlier this year, Dead Simple is currently premiering at The Orchard. I am not usually the biggest plan of plays, preferring an all singing all dancing musical, but on seeing the amazing cast I thought I was willing to give Dead Simple a go. Boy did this far exceed my expectations... I can honestly say I was hooked from the beginning and spent most of the play on the edge of my seat. My stomach churning with anxiety and my mind trying to guess and second guess every character and plot twist. By the interval I am usually planning in my head what I am going to do the next day but instead I spent the time dissecting the first half and trying to unravel what was yet to come. I decided against reading the book in advance of the play. I hadnt so much as read a detailed synopsis so that I could blindly experience the story in all its glory (although I heard on the grapevine that there are still some changes from the book which should keep Peter James fans on their toes). Essentially the story is based around Michael Harrison. Michael Harrison (played by Jamie Lomas, formally of BBC EastEnders and Holly Oaks) has it all; great career, great friends and a great fiancée and is on the verge of what appears to be a very uneventful stag do.... I wont say anymore though as I dont want to give too much away. The rest of the cast includes Tina Hobley, who youll probably know as Chrissie Williams in BBC Holby City who was superb. The performance of Rik Makarem, best known for roles in Emmerdale and Torchwood, was my standout. The all-star cast goes on and on and includes Michael McKell and Gray O’Brien. I am now completely hooked. I really hope another play of this nature comes to The Orchard soon. I can not recommend this play enough. The cast, acting and staging are superb and is thrilling from start to end. Although this play is extremely popular I have been reliably informed that there are a few tickets left so I would snap them up before you miss out.
