Deadline Extended to Sign up for Jan. 1 Coverage The Obama administration announced Friday an extension for consumers to sign up on the Health Insurance Marketplace for new health coverage to start Jan. 1, 2014. Consumers now have until Dec. 23, 2013, to sign up for coverage, instead of Dec. 15. They still must pay their first monthly premium by Dec. 31 to get coverage on Jan. 1. Monday, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas made the decision to extend the deadline for off-Marketplace product purchases as well. All applicants, whether buying a Marketplace plan or an off-Marketplace plan, have until Dec. 23 to apply for Jan. 1 coverage. Open enrollment for a Marketplace plan continues through March 31, 2014. While we don’t have all the details for this extension, we will continue to communicate often with producers and consumers to make sure they have what they need to make informed choices. On a related note, the administration also announced the open enrollment period next year will start on Nov. 15, 2014, instead of the originally announced Oct. 15. More information will be provided closer to those dates.
