Deanna Page December 2 at 9:57pm · One of the many things on my mind tonight.....Is anyone else seeing all the advertising for holiday loans this season? REALLY??? You are borrowing money at whatever percent interest for Christmas presents for the kiddies?? I think you may be missing the point of the holiday! Remembering Christmases past where we shopped at bargain shops for clothes that the girls needed and a couple of second hand toys. We focused on building traditions and memories (reading Christmas stories, making cookies, playing games, making paper chains and snowflakes for the tree, being together, laughing, etc, you know...things that are FREE) instead of playing the I am going into debt because my kids have to have all the latest tech toys and a new bicycle and a pony game. Sometimes it was not easy when everyone else was showing off their new fancy stuff, but 10 years after all those things are broken or outgrown and forgotten, our girls have memories of great times together at Christmas. Now as our Christmases are getting more flexible with the introduction of young men in our family, we know that we always had what truly mattered--each other. Holiday Loans?? REALLY??!!! *hmmph* Unlike · · Share You, Micah Freeman, Theresas Snider, Sharon V Moss and 12 others like this. .................................................................................................................................................. Sandra Carol Mers Clayton Amen! Amen! and Amen! When I read of how much money many peoples Christmases cost, I about choke ... like I do when I read of how much people spend on a wedding or even a funeral!!! (choke, choke, choke!) My first thought is always, Wow! They are sure well off! (and try not be envious). My second thought: Wish theyd share some of that with me!, and my third thought: Wonder how much they will owe in January?! Oh, and my fourth thought: Okay, Ill just continue to use my imagination, what bit of cash we can come up with and LOTS of love.......because I dont want to OWE in January. Our kids (PKs - Pastors Kids and MKs - Missionary Kids...they were both :) ) are all grown; they have most of the same memories you posted: setting up the creche - we usually put the nativity scene in the little living room window when we lived in the first-floor apartment in Algrange, France - the window was right on the sidewalk, and people would stop and look at the creche, we made Christmas cards, baked cookies and cakes and made candy, strung popcorn garlands, made paper chains (still do!), cut and pasted and colored tree decorations, made spiced apple cider to drink with popcorn and Christmas cookies, put puzzles together (I didnt much, but it was a Clayton family tradition, so I always provided a new puzzle for John and the kids to put together at Christmas), cut snowflakes, listened to Christmas music and watched Christmas stuff on t.v. (a lot of which was French, since we lived in France while the kids were growing up), invited students and other friends in to share our meals and holiday traditions, played Christmas carols on the piano and the guitar, walked around our little town to see the lights and decorations (though back then there werent as many as they now have), participated in church Christmas doings, delighted in all the Christmas cards we received as we hung them up for decor, read the Christmas story from the Bible, made the traditional French buche de Noel cake, as well as the American pumpkin and mince-meat pie ... and got teary-eyed and a bit homesick when we sang or heard being sung: Silent Night. Yep, the stuff, expensive or not, soon passes away, but those memories linger on and on and on and.................................................. Thanks for bringing up some of those memories, Deanna. Just now · Edited · Like
