Dear All, 1) I believe that we should demand release of all political prisoners, not just Rasul Jafarov.This practice of demanding release of one person must end. 2) We should start developing list of officials who could be targeted with sanctions by US and EU for violation of human rights in Azerbaijan. Lemberanski, investigator, who dealt with 8 NIDA activists and Leyla Yunus should be first, but not the last target. He had Shengen visa and was boasting with this in front of Leyla Yunus. 3) We should draft a letter with the list of people who could be target of individual sanctions and work on it. Unless we do this and implement this any sort of statements of concern is just a piece of paper that nobody in Azerbaijan even cares about. 4) We need a working group for this to be created. Leading international human rights organizations should take a lead. It is very difficult work and needs a lot of lobby work, but I see no other more important work to do now for Azerbaijan. You have to understand that Aliyev made strategic decision to exterminate all independent NGOs. Arrests will continue until you act in a language that they understand. It may even not change anything, but at least they will not walk around in EU/US after they jail human rights defenders. Basic fairness must be provided here. Who can take the leadership in this issue? We need organization that has strong resources and proper infrastructure. Bill Browder succeeded with Magnitsky Act, but he had a lot of money and right strategy, strong PR anc Communication managers. Where we can get all this? That is the question! Best, Emin.
