Dear All, As all of you are aware, the government of India has brought the Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India (BRAI) bill in the parliament to fasten the process for approval of Genetically Modified (GM) crops. Mr. Jayram Ramesh had imposed a moratorium on GM crops in India when he was in the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF). However he was transferred later on and now the Government is going to enact a law, to allow free entry to GM crops in India. It is well known that GM crops pose danger to human health, environment, crop diversity everywhere in the world. The field trials on mice have shown many adverse effects on their health, including genetic mutations. As a result, most of the countries of the Europe have imposed a ban on GM crops or imposed severe restrictions. Under the pressure of MNCs like Monsanto, this bill is being pushed in the parliament. Recently many organizations in Pune came together and hosted a public meeting at the Mahatama Phule Mandai on the issue of BRAI bill. TheSamajvadi Yuvjan Sabha, Lokshashan Andolan, Pune Jilha Molkarin Sangathana, Sarva Shramik Sanghatana participated in this public meeting along with Lokayat. There is an urgent need for all of us to step forward and start educating common people on the ill effects of GM foods, the dangers they pose and the BRAI bill. To know more you can see the film Poison on the Platter made by Mahesh Bhatt, on youtube at youtube/watch?v=48g8Kt6rYz4 and on vimeo at vimeo/4851855 .
