Dear All, Im John Affleck, the current President of the Alumni Leadership Council. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself: I graduated (just barely!) from the MA program in 2000 after earning a BA in English Literature, and trying my hand at literature for a few years. Why Economics? The truth is, I saw an ad on the Red Line here in Boston for a Masters Program in Economics, and having reached a dead-end in novel writing and the publishing industry, thought Why not? Why not? The math, thats why! What a shock! I didnt know one could receive a score of 23 on a test. But from great challenges, one can find great results, and I most certainly did. The program, for all its rigor, changed how my mind worked, and armed it with skills that have proved indispensable in my career. Like many of you who graduated recently, I arrived in the labor force in the teeth of a recession, and was frustrated in my job search. I eventually found my first real job in market research, a wonderful first job, and then had the rare privilege of joining Cornerstone Research -- an opportunity for which I am eternally grateful. Since 2007, I have had the pleasure of working with the CoStar Group, forecasting and analyzing commercial real estate markets. I leapt at the chance to participate in the Alumni Leadership Council because I count myself so very fortunate and blessed, in no small part because of the education I received at BU. And I know all too well how frustrating the job search can be, and how fraught and sometimes depressing can be managing ones career. Finally, I made many wonderful friends from all over the world at BU, and Id like to be one of the first to welcome the students who come from abroad to my home country, the United States. So: may I say hello and welcome on behalf of the Council.
