Dear All: This week I would like to highlight our Pre-Algebra class taught by Teresa Waggoner. Teresa holds an undergraduate degree in Intermediate Education with a concentration in Mathematics and a Master of Arts degree in the Teaching of Mathematics. A current Deerstream math teacher, Teresa has taught in public and private schools, tutored students of various math levels, and has created and taught an Algebra class for homeschoolers. Topics Covered The Pre-Algebra course is designed to help prepare students for success in Algebra 1. We will review all the arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. We will extend mastery of these operations to positive and negative numbers. We will also work with ratio, proportion, and percent. In addition, we will begin work with simple equations and inequalities. We will also include work with geometric figures and the coordinate plane as well as some beginning work in statistics and probability. What to Expect The class will include daily presentation of new material (with student participation), time for working on new material with opportunity for questions and help, and homework assignments. Homework will be checked and discussed during class, and frequent pop quizzes can be expected. Periodic testing upon completion of each unit will also be a part of the evaluation process for this class. What’s Next? Successful completion of this course should enable students to proceed confidently to Algebra 1, and subsequently to higher level mathematics courses. The skills mastered continue to be a part of mathematics at every level, and will also aid the student in the study of science, statistics, and engineering. This class is open to middle and high school students and meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:45-2:15 at the Chapel Hill Bible Church.
