Dear Ames Community School District, once again it is that time when, as a good parent, I am supposed to buy school supplies for my 5 children. This year I am going to do something different. I will send my kids with a notebook and some pencils. I will then let the teachers tell me what my kids need for each individual classroom. After 14 years of doing this, I have learned the lists are outdated, I buy stuff that never gets used, then am asked to buy more stuff later when the classrooms run low. I have a solution that I have stated over and over again: CHARGE A SUPPLY FEE. Waive it for the kids who are needy and order the supplies needed in bulk. I would GLADLY spend twice as much if I did not have to go shopping with an outdated list of supplies, with weird specifics as to the brand name of glue and crayons. ..... thanks for listening.
