Dear Battle of Homestead Foundation Friends, Cheer up during the doldrums of summer and come out to our two fine programs later this month! You’ll find good companionship, community, interesting ideas, and more. Here are the two events: AUGUST 24, 2013, SATURDAY, 1:30 P.M. “AVELLA: A HOMETOWN STRUGGLE” and “THE LILLY STORY: A SMALL TOWN TAKES A STAND.” Two local histories dominate this program. Maria Stockman, a Battle of Homestead Foundation intern from Avella, will present an overview of the organization’s internship program. She will also explain her interesting research into the popular Avella-based novel, I Went to Pit College [no typo], and its controversial author,, Laura Gilfillan. Jim Hohman will introduce and comment on “The Lilly Story,” a video that he himself shot and edited when the town was celebrating its recent bicentennial. The film feature the memorials the singular town erected, including a notable one that commemorates the vigorous protest of the community against an invasion of the Ku Klux Klan in 1924. AUGUST 29, 2013, THURSDAY, 7:30 P.M. NOTHING BUT A MAN (1964). 95 mins. Directed by Michael Roener. This pioneering independent film tells the story of how Duff Anderson, a poor African-American railroad worker, struggled for personal dignity in the context of the extreme racism that prevailed in Alabama in the 1960s. Influenced by the civil rights movement, this proud man who demanded respect frightened his black father-in-law and angered his hostile white employers, with dire consequences. This sensitive movie shows how and why the notion of “I Am A Man!” resonated with Duff and ordinary African-Americans. Please forward this message to anyone who might be interested.
