Dear Bucketheads: Firstly, congratulations on raising so much funding for ALS... theres no doubt that this publicity stunt is working. Its for a good cause, and you do it because it makes you feel good, but lets be honest... If you had a total contributing margin of -zero- last year (before the bucket), then theres a good chance youre doing it to get attention and be part of a trend. Theres also a good chance that your contributions next year will match your contributions of last year, after the hype is over. If Im wrong, then my hats off to you... but itll take more than a brief spike caused by sensationalism to have long-lasting effects. By way of example, Ive donated every single year to the American Cancer Society over the past 20 years; it shouldnt take a spectacle to get people going, but alas, it does. Skip the bucket and be real... help a cause of your choosing consistantly and without the self-promoting spectacle of the bucket (unless you already had plans to ice-bucket yourself before this all started, of course). Lets see what next year looks like; if ALS contributions remain solid (within 15%) this time next year, I will not only apologize profusely, Ill do the bucket myself.
