Dear CSBS Faculty and Students As you may know, the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences has held a research and teaching conference for the last seven years. This year we continue in that tradition, and will co-sponsor our conference with the College of Health Sciences & Human Services and PACE. Last spring an ad-hoc committee in the College approved of this collaboration and this year’s theme. Please see the call for papers below. We welcome submissions from students, faculty, and community members in the form of research posters, research papers, panels or roundtables. The 2014 University of Texas-Pan American College of Social & Behavioral Sciences Research and Teaching Symposium in Edinburg, Texas will feature cutting edge research on the topic of health, in its broadest sense, through panel sessions, undergraduate and graduate student research posters, and workshops. We seek poster, paper, panel, and roundtable proposals that will be informative and relevant, informed by theory and research, encourage opportunities for learner engagement, and/or demonstrate application to the work of participants. Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit poster, paper, panel, and/or roundtable proposals. Faculty and students from UTPA and other institutions of higher education, as well as community members, are invited to submit paper, panel, and/or roundtable proposals. The deadline for submissions is midnight on January 29, 2014 online (click here). In your proposal you will be asked to include the type of presentation, title, an abstract of 150-175 words, your full contact information and that of any co-authors, and any audiovisual requests. Proposals and presentations may be in English or Spanish. Pre-register here. Questions? Contact the Conference Chair, Jessica Lavariega Monforti at [email protected]. (Please type “8th ARC” in the Subject line.) The conference will take place on our campus from March 26-29, 2014. Please mark your calendar. CFP: Health and Health Policy in the Social Sciences As higher education in the south Texas region focuses its attention to building a medical school, recognizing the complex relationship between globalization, local development and health, this symposium calls for research from many disciplinary and methodological perspectives. The goal is to highlight the important contribution that can be made by the social sciences to this field, and also the practical and methodological challenges implicit in the study of health and wellness. Research topics could include, but are not limited to, cultural and health and wellness traditions and practices, and policy implications for health outcomes, issues related to health literacy, health disparities and public health, and building community knowledge of health and wellness.
