Dear Church Members and Friends, We are in the midst of change and transition at First Church. As head of staff, I want to let you know of some of these changes that will occur in the next six months. Both Ken Herman, our Director of Music/Organist and Liz Jones, our Direction of Religious Education and Family Ministry have been contemplating the right time to retire and have chosen to retire this summer. Ken Herman has served this congregation for 42 years and will be retiring on or around August 1, 2014. He will return to the congregation in October for a Farewell and Appreciation concert to honor his service to this church and our UU Association. Please watch the Window for details regarding this celebration. A task group will be formed to begin the process of a search for a new Music Director and I will work closely with this group to ensure a good match is made for our congregation’s needs. We will consult with the UU Musicians Network and other experts in the field to help us fill this important position in our staff and worship teams. Liz Jones will also be retiring this summer after 21 years of service to our congregation and our larger UU Association. A Farewell and Appreciation Celebration will be held in Liz’s honor in September and details of this Celebration will be in future Window editions. And again, I will work closely with a task group to find a person who will focus primarily on serving children and families in our congregation. The task group and I will consult with LREDA (Liberal Religious Educators Association) and others in the field to ensure a good match is made for our needs. Both Ken and Liz will retire this summer so that their successors can join with the new second minister and the current program staff to begin a new era of ministry at First Church. Ken and Liz have given so much to this community and they were the constant presence for the congregation twelve years ago during the interim and when the congregation was in search for new ministers. Arvid and I have valued their ministry with us and all that they have contributed to the life of this congregation.
