Dear Colleagues, I would strongly encourage a NO vote on the consultant contract proposals. Firstly, the time-scale to near parity is far too long at 12 years. However my main concern and I know this is shared by others is the concept of performance related increments. This is a completely nebulous term and could be construed to mean virtually anything by an employer. For example, if the hospital runs significantly over-budget would any consultant get their increment for that year? Would the increment be based on the performance of a department as a whole or an individual consultant? How will an individuals performance be assessed? If your Clinical Director and yourself have a disagreement for whatever reason will you be getting your increment that year? To agree to such a contract would essentially be assigning us as hostages to fortune. Our salary increments would be left to the whim of the employer. The IHCA are currently bringing cases to the High Court for consultants on the 2008 contract for non-payment of increments. Please please do not make the mistake of assuming that the HSE/DoH is a benevolent employer that will act in our best interests in the future. Their past record clearly demonstrates that they have consistently taken advantage of NCHDs in this country and latterly they have done this to new entrant consultants. We would be foolish in the extreme to presume that we would get our salary increments with this proposed contract. VOTE NO.
