Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the staff and membership of JNCL-NCLIS, it gives me great pleasure to announce that we will be participating in a briefing to congressional staff on August 21st. The announcement of this briefing is copied below. If you are in the DC area, please do consider attending. With best wishes, Bill Rivers BRIEFING: The Benefits of Foreign Language in K-12 Education 2pm, Wed, Aug 21, 2013 Rayburn 2103 Dear Colleague: Foreign language instruction has been shown to be an invaluable part of primary education. From enhancing cognitive ability to improving the overall success rate of students transitioning to college, study of a foreign language early on gives kids a leg up later in life. Here are just a few facts from recent studies: Children who are exposed to a foreign language at a young age achieve higher levels of cognitive development at an earlier age. Students of foreign languages tend to score higher on standardized tests. Results from the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) show that students who had studied a foreign language for 4 or more years outscored other students on the verbal and math portions of the test. Students who were in "rigorous" programs in high school-that included three years of foreign language study-were likely to earn better grades in college and less likely to dropout. Studying a foreign language helps students understand English grammar better and improves their overall communication and problem-solving skills. Please join us at 2pm, Wed, Aug 21 to discuss the benefits of foreign language instruction in K-12 Education. Speaker William P. Rivers, Ph.D. Executive Director, Joint National Committee for Languages National Council for Language and International Studies To RSVP or if you have any questions, please contact Matt Kelley ([email protected]) in my office. Sincerely, SAM FARR Member of Congress
