Dear Colleagues and friends, Savan Masih a young Christian man victim of blasphemy allegation 295-C has been awarded with death sentence and 200,000 rupees as fine by the learned session court Lahore on March 27, 2014. Savan Masih victim of blasphemy resident of Joseph Colony Lahore as we all know about this famous high profiled case in international media and due to this case hundreds of houses were burn down in Joseph Colony Lahore on March 08 2013 a year ago. Savan Masih got arrested by the police after the false accusations charged by a local Muslim who has a barber’s shop and he was one of the closed friends of Savan Masih. After the allegation was made on Savan Masih, Muslims became furious. In the result they harmed Christian belongings and hundreds of houses were burn. Muslim extremists tried to kick out Christians and wanted to grab this part of Christian property to use it as a factory area. It became a hot issue of the national and international papers and electronic media as well. The Supreme Court of Pakistan also took the notice of the matter and the motive behind this false blasphemy case was clear to everyone that there was nothing to do with blasphemy. CLAAS is taking care of all legal expenses of the cases registered against Savan Masih under blasphemy accusations through Mr. Naeem Shakir Advocate Supreme Court of Pakistan and Lahore High Court, Mr. Tahir Bashir Advocate High Court and legal consultant of CLAAS. CLAAS is also responsible to provide legal assistance in the case registered against culprits/Muslim extremists who burn the houses of Christians, through Mr. Tanvir Masih Gill and other 4 lawyers from Christian Law Association Pakistan. Since the time Savan Masih is in judicial lock-up. He was facing jail trial since last year which was completed on March 24, 2014 after several case hearings. Mr. Naeem Shakir the leading defence lawyer of Savan Masih case recorded his final arguments during the court hearing on March 24 but the judgement was not announced and kept reserved till to the next hearing on March 27, 2014. CLAAS very much hope for the right, bold and fair decision of the court. Because of the strong arguments of defence lawyers and politeness of Judge and hope that Savan Masih will be free from the charges. CLAAS was 100% sure that Savan Masih will be free, but on the other side there was pressure on the court to make the decision against Savan and to punish him with death sentence. On March 27, 2014 at about 04:00 PM CLAAS lawyers Mr. Naeem Shakir, Mr. Tahir Bashir, Mr. Nasir Anjum and court Clerk Ayaz Gill was present in the court, the court order was announced in the prison court room and a copy of the order was handed over to Savan Masih which was a shocking for CLAAS team as we were expecting and praying for the release of Savan Masih as he is innocent and it is published in the national and international news papers that this false case was registered against Savan Masih because the Muslim extremists wanted to grab Christian property and Punjab Government MPA’s and MNA’s were supporting and instigating the mob to burn the houses. CLAAS is preparing an appeal against punishment to file in the High Court on Saturday March 29, 2014.
