Dear Community Partner: It is my pleasure to share with you information regarding the Pittsburgh Pirates Annual Jackie Robinson Art, Essay and Poetry Contest. One of the most significant moments in Major League Baseball (MLB) history was when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier on April 15, 1947. In celebration of the anniversary, the Pittsburgh Pirates invite your school or organization to participate in our contest. This is a fantastic opportunity for youth to express their thoughts and ideas in a creative manner. The contest is open to students in grades three (3) through eight (8) in the Pirates market area. This contest will uniquely challenge students to display their knowledge of Jackie Robinson and/or their perspective about the nine values for success. This contest is free, simple for educators and can be very exciting for students. This is a great classroom assignment or after school activity that can include lessons on history, reading and writing. Please see the attached document for more details on the contest including submission rules and guidelines for submissions. Students have three (3) areas to participate: ART: Submit an original piece of artwork depicting Jackie Robinson. What does Jackie Robinson mean to you? How has Jackie Robinson’s life impacted your own? Which one of Jackie Robinson’s nine values of success inspires you the most? ESSAY: Write an essay that chronicles the personal struggles of Jackie Robinson. What characteristics do you feel were necessary to overcome these challenges? What life lessons can be learned from Jackie Robinson’s success? POETRY: Write a poem that explores one or more of Jackie Robinson’s nine values for success – courage, citizenship, commitment, determination, excellence, integrity, justice, persistence and teamwork. Entries will be divided into age categories to assure that each student is given a fair opportunity to win (i.e. grades 3–4, grades 5–6 and grades 7–8). It is easy to enter as students create their piece and submit by mail to the Pirates office before the entry deadline of March 13, 2015. Prizes include (subject to change & availability): · Pittsburgh Pirates complimentary game tickets for winners · Chances to win Pirates tickets for the entire school · Autograph item(s) for select students and teachers · Pre–game awards ceremony with Pirates celebrities and on–field recognition for winners · Students will be selected at random for additional prizes including tickets, promotional items and autographed items · Complimentary Food and Beverages · And More! Please feel free to share this contest with any appropriate teachers, colleagues, or members of the community that may have interest in this opportunity. Should you have any questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me at 412–325–4731 or at Chaz.Kellem@pirates.
