Dear Community Partners, It is my pleasure to invite you to attend the kickoff for Summer BreakSpot, a federal nutrition program that enables school districts, parks and recreation programs, faith-based groups, and other nonprofit organizations to serve free meals to children when school is out. The event will highlight one of many Summer BreakSpot partnerships across the state working to ensure that at-risk children in under-served communities have access to nutritious meals. Thanks to the National League of Cities (NLC), the Food Research and Action Center, and Walmart, the City of Tallahassee received a grant to work in partnership with America’s Second Harvest of the Big Bend, the Tallahassee Housing Authority, and Florida Impact to combat child hunger in Tallahassee and Leon County. To meet this goal, the partner organizations have begun retrofitting a bus donated by Leon County Public Schools to facilitate delivery of free meals to children in hard-to-reach communities. The NLC grant also enabled local parks and recreation programs, housing authority community centers, and other afterschool programs to begin serving free suppers to children at the beginning of this school year through the federal Afterschool Meals Program. Tallahassee is the third Florida city to receive this type of grant, along with the cities of Orlando and Tampa. Immediately following the presentations by community leaders, attendees will have an opportunity to observe an afterschool supper served to children at Palmer Munroe Teen Center at 6:00 p.m. Please see the event details below: WHAT: Site visit and media event to launch the Summer BreakSpot program WHO: • Jamie Nash, National League of Cities • Mayor John Marks, City of Tallahassee • Rich English, America’s Second Harvest of the Big Bend • Sheila Costigan, Foundation for Leon County Schools • Robin Safley, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services WHEN: Monday, May 19, 5:30 p.m. WHERE: Palmer Munroe Teen Center, 1900 Jackson Bluff Road I hope you will be able to join us as we continue to fight hunger in our community.
