Dear Conservative, Higher education in Michigan has a crisis on its hands. In 12 of 15 Michigan public universities, fewer than 31% of students graduate college in four years. That means higher costs and more debt for students, parents and taxpayers. Its time we do something about it. And thats why Im running for Michigan State University Trustee. Today, student loans account for $1.2 trillion of our federal deficit. Thats greater than the total Americans owe on credit cards and auto loans! Yet almost 3,000 Michigan students will spend more time on campus than their peers at public universities around the country at an alarming cost of $30 million dollars -- thats $10,000 per student. We can help solve this debt crisis if students earned their degrees on time, saving money on housing, books and tuition, enabling them to enter the workforce sooner. Here are some things we can do about it: Fewer electives, especially for courses like bowling and tennis Match students with majors that will lead them to jobs. A mandatory class on fiscal responsibility Lower tuition for those who graduate in four years, freeing up space for more incoming freshmen to gain admission. We also have to take a stand for what we value in our education system. Today, too many people champion mediocrity and forget about what made America great -- exceptionalism. Thats the problem with Common Core standards -- the federal government is forcing its standards on our schools, trickling down to our universities. I stand against Common Core, and I stand FOR requiring university students to take a course in the Constitution and our countrys founding principles. If elected, my job as Trustee is a serious one. People see the impact that student loans have on our economy, and it is apparent that education needs to be reformed on every level. I hope I can count on your support on August 23 at State Convention so together we can help prepare our students for the next generation of leadership here in Michigan.
