Dear Crime Spotter I would like to bring to your attention regarding a scam. A week or two ago, a friend of mine was having a problem with her computer. Out of the blue, she received a phone call from a foreign man offering assistance with her Google Chrome and that he would talk her through the problem and repair. After doing exactly as he told her, the problem persisted. He then offered to repair at a cost she thought was in our currency.....only to discover that in fact, it was in American Dollars and that the repair would cost her in the vicinity of R2,600! After quick thinking, she managed to stop the payment, as although it had been authorized, it hadn’t been processed yet! She then took her computer to her local repair man and was told of the scam that seemed to have hit East London. I am not sure how many people have in fact, been caught. Blow me down, I received a phone call today, also from a foreigner offering me assistance with my computer......he asked if I had discovered that it had become very slow and that possibly I had received unwanted mail. My friend happened to be with me and I tried to keep him talking so that she could listen to his voice! Yes, the same guy for sure!!! Now, I wonder how many other people have been had? Also, this person has access to our names and landline numbers!! Thought that possibly, you may want to warn the public to be very cautious in this regard and not accept assistance from anybody on line or over the telephone.
