Dear Davis County PD Support Group Attendees, Thanks to all who attended our March support group meeting last Wednesday night! We would like to welcome some new members that showed up this month including Joyce, Kaarina, Robert, and their spouses. Our numbers continue to grow and we welcome you with open arms. Our group is geared toward anyone whose life has been affected by Parkinson’s disease, including their caregivers and family members. Again, welcome to our new members and we’re glad to have you on board! I’d like to send out a special thank you to our guest speaker, Mr. Mike Hanney from the Davis County Health Department. If anyone needs to contact him regarding any of the services or programs that Davis County has to offer, he can be reached at (801) 525-5083, the main office at (801) 525-5050, or on-line at co.davis.ut.us/health/ (click on Family Health & Senior Services). Mike also mentioned that the services that are available at the Davis County Health Department are also available at the Weber and Salt Lake Health Departments. Here are the links to those agencies: webermorganhealth.org/, and slcohealth.org/. And in case you missed this month’s meeting, Mike left me with some extra handouts which I will bring in April. In addition, if anyone is interested in the Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions class or any of the Living Well workshops, you can contact Ms. Jessica Hardcastle at the Davis County Health Department at (801) 525-5087 or [email protected]. I talked about a recent news story that KSL had ran regarding Deep Brain Stimulation. Here’s the link to that story: ksl/?sid=28941965&nid=148. As Meredith Smith and Dave Healey mentioned, mark your calendars for the 2014 Pedal Away Parkinson’s, taking place this year on Saturday, July 19th at Gailey Park in Kaysville. This annual affair not only raises awareness of PD, but it is also a very entertaining gala for the entire family. Activities include a 10-mile bike ride, live music, raffle, silent auction, games and fun. Even if you’re not a bike rider, I strongly encourage you to attend this awesome event! To make a donation, volunteer to help out, or if you just need information, you can visit the web site at: https://utahapda.org/pedalawayparkinsons/Home.html. In addition, the organizers of Pedal Away Parkinson’s are always on the lookout for sponsors and support. So if you would like to help out, contact your employers, organizations you are associated with, friends, and family. Sponsorship forms can be found on the Pedal Away Parkinson’s link above. As Jock and I talked about, there are many opportunities to volunteer for PD research studies being conducted at the University of Utah. I have attached a couple of flyers explaining two that are ongoing right now (contact information is included). For further information on these and other studies, you can also contact Rebecca Starks at (801) 585-2354, or email her at: [email protected]. On a personal note: I believe that these studies are important, and as Jock pointed out, some of the exercise-related ones can be a lot of fun. And the way I see it, if these medical professionals can learn something from studying those of us whose lives have been affected by PD, then it could (perhaps) lead to earlier diagnosis, a better understanding of the causes for PD, or (possibly) new treatments for PD patients. Reminder of the schedule change: Our April meeting featuring Dr. Lauren Schrock and the Parkinson’s Education Series lecture will be held on the SECOND Wednesday in April, (April 9th), and NOT on the first Wednesday, (April 2nd). This change to the second Wednesday is only for April’s meeting; all other monthly meetings are scheduled for the FIRST Wednesday of each month. Finally, I would like to thank Ron and Kaye, and Mr. Cordell Hatch from the Teva pharmaceutical company for bringing in the cookies! As always, I welcome feedback and suggestions, and I will take them all under consideration in hopes of improving each and every subsequent meeting. The Quote of the month for March: I want to set the record straight. Parkinsons doesnt affect my work at all. Theres nothing that I could do before the diagnosis that I cant do now. - Maurice White, founding member of the group Earth, Wind and Fire, and PD patient Thanks again to you all, and I hope you have a great March! Sincerely, Dale George
