Dear Democratic Friends: My best friend, and our Harris County Democratic Party Chair, Lane Lewis, is about to celebrate his 47th Birthday! You heard me 47! Well folks, Lane is not handling this real well, he thinks he is getting old and yearns to be 21 forever. Now most of you join me in wishing we were only 47, looked half as good and handled ourselves just a quarter as well! As you know, Lane has been going gangbusters as Chair of our party since he assumed the position in December 2011. Folks might not realize it, but there is absolutely no compensation which comes with the responsibilities – other than satisfaction of making a difference. Lane does all of this in addition to a full time job and I long ago told him he had the job nobody wanted, but everybody wanted to do. I might not be the most unbiased guy in the world, but I have been around the block many times and I have yet to fall off the turnip truck, so when I say he has done one of the best jobs I have seen in my over 40 years of activity, you can take it to the bank. Funny thing is, lots of folks who have both worked with Lane and observed him agree with my assessment, Here’s the deal. Senator John Whitmire, Lane’s Chief of Staff Diana Patino, Party Secretary Doris Fears and Party Treasurer Lenora Sorola-Pohlman are joining with me on Lane’s Birthday which is Monday the 17th, to throw a combination birthday celebration and thank you soiree for him. We’ll have some lite bites, wine, soft drinks, sweets and water (that’s for me) along with a big old special Birthday Cake we are having to get a fire permit to light all the candles. Our party finance chair, Bill Baldwin, has graciously offered the use of his offices at BOULEVARD REALTY located at 1545 Heights Blvd starting around 6:30 p.m. and going until about 9. Last year we tried the surprise route and that lasted about 15 minutes, so this year we thought we would just put it all out there. One thing remains the same, just like last year, not to embarrass Lane anymore than we plan to, we are asking that no gifts be given, instead we asking our elected officials, candidates, party clubs, organizations, local unions and senate districts to make either $25 or $50 donations which will be used to help buy new 18” seminar tables for the HCDP headquarters in Lane’s name. (For those who did phone banking, you know how much they are needed to get more phone bankers in which the smaller width will allow). Last year we were able to purchase new chairs for the foyer and other chairs for the office along with a formal podium that has been well used. PLEASE CONTACT CARL ASAP with your intentions so proper credit can be made at the party....Additionally, we will ask all attendees to make a minimal $5 contribution at the door – not mandatory of course – but every little bit helps and the party headquarters desperately needs some attention new furnishings would provide and fill the bill. Thank you all, We hope this all makes Lane – and each of us just a little brighter since he is getting oh so close to social security time, but most of all we want folks to come out and say HI and wish him well and visit with one another as we say thanks for a hard job done well and his dedication not only to the party, but to each of us – day in and day out!
