Dear Don, Even as Israel’s international isolation grows, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is strongly backing bold new legislation that would codify in law the reality that Israel is a uniquely Jewish nation with a uniquely Jewish calling, destiny, and character. Netanyahu- XSmall The measure was passed by Israel’s cabinet and now goes to the Knesset. It would create a constitutional “Basic Law” defining Israel’s identity as a Jewish state. The language of the proposed legislation declares, in part: “The state of Israel is the national home of the Jewish People in which it realizes its aspiration for self-determination in accordance with its cultural and historic heritage...The right to realization of national self-determination in Israel is exclusive to the Jewish People.” Needless to say, this proposed law has been met with criticism, anger, and dismay in various capitals around the world — including in Barack Obama’s Washington, D.C. Netanyahu answered that criticism this week by saying, “Israel is a democratic state, as it was and always will be. What is being challenged today is Israel’s existence as the nation-state of Jewish People, and therefore we will anchor in the law this national right of the Jewish People alongside a guarantee of individual rights for all its citizens.” If successful, this change to Israel’s constitution carries enormous significance going forward.
