Dear Dr. Bajraktarevic: Now is a critical time to make your voice heard for children in the nations capitol. In November, the entire House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate are up for election, and there could not be a more important time to speak up for children. Come to the AAP’s 2014 Legislative Conference in Washington, DC June 15-17. There, you will join medical students, residents, fellows and pediatricians from across the country to learn how to speak up for children at the federal level. You will also: Attend skills-building workshops in negotiation, social media and crafting effective messages Hear firsthand from distinguished guest speakers, such as members of Congress, White House staff, federal agency leaders and media experts Go to Capitol Hill to urge Congress to put children first Learn about federal policy priorities impacting children and pediatricians Earn a maximum of 1 6.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) ™ With more than one in five children living in poverty, there have been recent proposals in Congress recommending steep cuts to programs designed to help lift families out of poverty. With more than 16 million children living in households where food is scarce, the House of Representatives passed a Farm Bill last fall that would have dramatically reduced funding for food stamps. The Emergency Medical Services for Children Act, Combating Autism Act and the Maternal, Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program all need to be renewed this year. In this crowded political landscape and in this pivotal election year, we need every voice to come together to urge Congress to support these important children’s health programs. The time is now. This three-day, interactive advocacy training will allow you to learn about the current federal landscape impacting children and pediatricians, network with other advocates, and hear firsthand from leading experts about child health priorities. Visit aap.org/legcon to download the conference brochure, learn more about the conference and to sign up today. Time is running out: Early bird registration expires in one month, on May 14 th. If you have thought about attending the conference in the past, this is the year to do so. Whether you are new to advocacy or experienced, whether this is your first or your fiftieth time to Capitol Hill, we welcome you to Legislative Conference. Without the power of a group of pediatricians united together in Washington speaking up for children, other issues will take priority. All too often, children’s needs are overlooked by federal legislators. Please join us in DC and urge our nation’s leaders to put children first.
