Dear Dr. Gearan Defending the failed policy is going to - TopicsExpress

Dear Dr. Gearan Defending the failed policy is going to be a losing proposition. I wish you could see how Alum are reacting on Facebook. To say they are embarrassed and completely disappointed is an understatement. You are losing Alum support by perpetuating rape culture. One poignant example I will share is that you hand out the book: Our Bodies Ourselves to incoming women and yet let a first years rapists go unpunished. Page 161 has an easily searchable quote in all caps that may help, WOMEN ARE NOT GUILTY FOR VIOLENCE COMMITTED BY MEN ON OUR BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT. Do the Colleges a favor and walk with the women during Take Back the Night. For every rose they place, you place one as well. Maybe youll get a glimpse on what the women of the Colleges think about rape and rape culture and its acknowledgement. After you are done there, go to the security building and read security reports going back 30 years or more. Are there as many accounts as there were roses? If there were more roses, you are in denial and the machination you so eloquently defended is broken and is designed to merely maintain legal protection of the institution and NOT the women who are raped. Bare in mind, the roses represent only the number of those bold enough to admit their rape, in some form, and does not include the silent women. These are women who do not come forward because they know the system will not serve them. Like white on black crime earlier this century and the last, but with more local on your watch feelings. Women you walk by every day, women you talk to perhaps who, behind a strong face are scarred by this rape culture on which you have now doubled down. Please consider this. In the past 2 years I have stayed on campus for reunion weekend with a group of Alums. While I am not a major contributor to the fund raising efforts, I did drop $170 on a room each time and I am sure some of my colleagues gave money above and beyond this fee. I will be actively campaigning to cease all money coming from my friends until such time as a reversal of policy is clearly and publicly stated and the 250+ Alums I maintain daily contact with have acknowledged it as a plausible solution to the problem. I will be distributing this letter to all the alums I know as my response to your continued effort to save HWS face rather than violated women who make up the Body of William Smith. Your continued denial of this is going to damage the school and cause loss of revenue, loss of matriculation and most importantly, loss of respect among those who have held the fire of pride amongst your Alums. Do something better please, I implore you. As a reasonable man, you must, at this point, understand it is a categorical imperative and time is of the essence. Rape must be deterred. Rapists must be punished. Full Stop. Sincerely, Rockwell Patterson
