Dear Elgin (whoever wants to take credit for making the “artistic choices” around here) If you want to be an Art City perhaps you should have ART? I have told anyone who will listen about how ArtPrize turned Grand Rapids into an Art City, and has brought over 400,000 people to a city no bigger than Elgin. I participated in ArtPrize the first two years and was proud of my city and happy to see the economic boost it desperately needed! Elgin has been trying to reestablish itself as an art community but wheres the art? The people? A mural? A public vote? Artistic freedom? At some point the city needs to loosen its grasp on what they perceive as art and let the artists do what they do. Let the public and people of Elgin decide WHAT IS ART. ArtPrize in Grand Rapids has more than 1,500 pieces of art displayed for free in public, vying for $560,000 in prizes. Here is a short primer for enjoying the 19-day event that drew more than 400,000 visitors downtown last year. • Open Call for Artists and Venues: Anyone over the age of 18 can be an artist and any space within the ArtPrize district can be a venue. Anyone can participate. • Independently Organized: The entire ArtPrize exhibition is independently organized by venues and artists who connect through artprize.org. • Public Vote and Juried Awards: Two grand prizes worth $400,000 and eight category awards worth $160,000. Half decided by public vote, and half decided by a jury of art experts. artprize.org/entries artprize.org/venues/?page=1-2 Thanks, Maria.
