Dear Evelyn, Its becoming exceedingly rare as a conservative to be able to say this, but I am proud of two specific Members of Congress today: Congressmen Matt Salmon and Ron DeSantis. Why, do you ask? I am so very proud to see two members of Congress rejecting preferential nonsense in Congress by proposing a 28th Constitutional Amendment, which would require their fellow Members to live under the very laws they pass, without exception. The proposed amendment (H.J. Res. 55) reads: Congress shall make no law respecting the citizens of the United States that does not also apply to the Senators and Representatives. The Amendment borrows language from Federalist Number 57, when James Madison opined in 1788, [T]he House of Representatives [...] can make no law which will not have its full operation on themselves and their friends, as well as on the great mass of the society. Madison continued, If this spirit shall ever be so far debased as to tolerate a law not obligatory on the legislature, as well as on the people, the people will be prepared to tolerate anything but liberty. Conservatives should never be quick to amend the Constitution. This proposal however does not change the character of the Constitution, and instead reinforces principles of our Founding Fathers which too many have forgotten. To help restore trust in government, this amendment has become necessary. We introduced H.J. Res. 55 the morning that news broke that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi had reached a deal with the Obama Administration to provide special Obamacare subsidies for Members of Congress and their staff, said Congressman DeSantis. This amendment is vital to ensure that every American plays by the same rules no matter if you are a member of the Washington elite or a small business owner in Daytona Beach. I think over the years Americans have probably gotten more incensed about Congress exempting themselves from certain laws that we end up passing on to the citizens as if the Members of Congress are part of an aristocracy, said Congressman Salmon. Every individual out there that cares about this Constitutional republic should get on the phone and call their Member of Congress and urge them to support H.J. Res. 55. This isnt the first time Congress has tried to live under a different set of rules than everybody else, to say the least. Too frequently Members of Congress have been caught taking part in using their position and influence while still in office to become personally wealthy. This elitist disregard for the law can also be seen in the White House, as President Obama was so quick to listen to expensive corporate lobbyists and delay the implementation of the employer insurance mandate by one year, while keeping the individual mandate for Obamacare intact. Members of Congress cannot be trusted to fix the Constitutional violations of the Obama Administration if they are allowed to live outside of the laws they write. Its time to reform Congress. Call your Member of Congress today at (202) 224-3121 and tell them to support the DeSantis-Salmon Amendment. And please take a moment to watch and share a short video of Congressmen Matt Salmon and Ron DeSantis as they explain this very important Constitutional Amendment: Standing with you in the fight, David N. Bossie President of Citizens United P.S. I encourage you to share this message with friends and family. With your help, we can help hold Washington accountable.
