Dear FB Friends, BT is encouraging you all to sign and send a strong message to the global community, meeting in Warsaw, Poland for Climate Change negotiations. The Philippine representatives have been on a hunger strike at the negotiations in solidarity with the victims of typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan, international code name). If you want to sign on to this statement, please email back to lidynacpil@gmail. Heres the statement: We Demand Climate Justice This is a most painful and difficult time for the people of the Philippines. It is painful for those among us who have lost loved ones, whose homes have been destroyed, who are staying in crowded “shelters” with little food or are still waiting to be rescued, who living with great uncertainty about our immediate future. It is painful even for those of us who were much less affected by Typhoon Yolanda but grieve with our relatives, our friends, our colleagues, with entire communities, for the untold loss and destruction of so many villages, towns, cities, even entire islands. This is also a time of tremendous outpouring of support from all around the world. We are touched and strengthened and grateful. But our people need more than solidarity and humanitarian assistance. We demand climate justice The typhoon that is Yolanda/Haiyan is the strongest typhoon to ever make landfall in recorded history thus far – but it was not the first of its terrible kind nor will it be the last. This is the 4th super-typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2013. In 2012 we had Habagat in Luzon and Typhoon Pablo in Southern Mindanao; in 2011 we had Typhoon Sendong in Northern Mindanao; in 2010 it was Typhoon Pepeng in Central Luzon, and in 2009 it was Typhoon Ondoy devastating MetroManila. Every year, extreme weather events hitting the Philippines are increasing in number and magnitude. Our people are suffering the terrible impacts of a climate crisis they had no part in creating, while those most responsible refuse to take the actions necessary to effectively address climate change – its causes and its consequences. Instead, we see the continued excessive consumption of energy by elites and corporations, the expansion of fossil fuel projects the aggressive promotion of false solutions, and the drive for profit-seeking investments in “Climate” projects and carbon markets. To the governments gathered in Warsaw: we want to see more than expressions sympathy and concern. We demand climate justice 1. We demand immediate, drastic cuts of global GHG emissions This will not happen without banning new fossil fuel projects and stopping the excessive consumption of energy by elites and corporations. All countries must live within a carbon budget that limits global temperature rise to below 1.5 degrees Celsius and this budget must be shared equitably. This means those who bear the greatest historical responsibility for climate change and in the process amassed wealth -- must assume the proportional burden of emissions reductions. 2. We demand an end to public subsidies for private fossil fuel corporations and the mobilization of public finance for swift and just transition to low carbon economies. This includes the fulfilment of the obligations of developed countries under the UN Framework Convention for Climate Change to provide public finance and technology transfer for developing countries for mitigation. 3. We demand the fulfilment of obligations to provide finance and technology needed by developing countries like the Philippines for adaptation and building resilience. We demand reparations for inescapable losses and damage from the onslaughts of the climate crisis, and the setting of an international mechanism as a first step to address this. 4. We demand an end to false solutions, the further expansion of carbon markets, and corporate domination of the climate negotiations. Yes, we are a resilient people. We are also a people that know how to persevere and fight hard. We renew our commitment to fight for climate justice in all arenas and at all levels – locally, nationally and globally. Signed:
