Due to the far reaching affects, as a concerned community, and in cooperation with the area Ministerial Alliances, local organizations, business leaders, school leaders, and community leaders, we are holding an extended community meeting Friday, June 21st at the East Newton High School Gym, beginning at 7:00 pm. At this meeting there will be an informative presentation and a question and answer session with guest speakers Nina Dean, legislative assistant to Representative Kurt Bahr, who has sponsored legislation that would remove Common Core from Missouri and Mary Byrne with the Missouri Coalition Against Core. Also invited is Mr. Wutke, S.W. Missouri area supervisor for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as well as state representatives from S.W. Missouri; Bill Reiboldt, Bill Lant, Bill White, Mike Moon, Charlie Davis and Scott Fitzpatrick. Common Core will change the face of education in our state and country. We invite you to research the issue and voice your thoughts at this meeting. The following are a list of questions we will addressing. Though there is concern at the state, school and community level, it takes more than just a few to raise questions, and awareness. If you find you have any questions about the meeting, or questions in general, feel free to contact us at: rsummerhouse@hotmail The “Show Me State” wants shown the answers to these questions about Common Core. Who is going to pay for Common Core? Will our property taxes go up to fund it? Does this mean more unfunded mandates for our schools? Does this reduce Federal spending and/or control? Will the Federal Government choose our curriculum? How will this affect homeschooling, private and Christian schools? What recourse do we have if some of the curriculum does not represent our values? Will Washington listen to us here in southwest Missouri? What lies ahead for student privacy when private companies, government agencies and a wide range of researchers have greater access to individual student data and information? Why are there thirty-two U.S. Congressmen in Washington expressing concerns to the Department of Education about Common Core? What will happen to our local school board if all decisions are made in Washington? If we don’t like this can we get out? What are the penalties if we do? How will student assessment scores affect our teachers? Why are some states pulling out of Common Core? Why has there been legislation to remove Common Core from our state? Please take the time to become informed, form your own list of questions to ask, and be an advocate for education and children June 21st!
