Dear Fellow Professionals, Greetings. I wish to inform that Dr. R. Vijayaraghavan, Former Special Officer (Publications & Public Relations), Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) retired from service on superannuation recently. The mere mention of Prof. Vijayaraghavan’s name reminds us of: his demonstration of exceptional creativity in organizing events especially training sessions, his flair in scripting for the media, gifted with a silver tongue and his ability to captivate the audience with expressive words, unbeatable presence of mind combined with inexhaustible humour, and best of all his unmatchable talent for public relations and pleasant mannerisms. Born in a farm family in Pongalur village, now part of Tiruppur district, Prof. Vijayaraghavan as a fresh postgraduate from IARI, New Delhi entered the portals of TNAU as a Research Associate in 1982. During his professional service he has held multifarious positions viz., Deputy Director (Information), Deputy Director (Students Welfare), Head, KVK, Madurai, Head, Dept. of Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology, Coimbatore, Head, KVK, Coimbatore, Professor, Community Radio Station, Head, Training Division, and finally as Special Officer (Publications & Public Relations). As an undergraduate student in TNAU, he won the coveted Chief Minister’s Gold Medal for the Best Student Orator of the University. He also stood National First in Agricultural Extension in ICAR Junior Fellowship Examination during 1976, which paved way for his entry into IARI. There he received the Best Thesis award for PG in Agricultural Extension during 1978 from Dr. M.S. Swaminathan during the IARI Convocation. The meritorious recognition Award presented during the National Workshop on Community Radio, held at New Delhi, for the Best Content Developer and Presenter of Creative Community Radio Programmes is noteworthy. Though he had two equally best career options before him ie., Agricultural Research Service and Research Associate in TNAU, he chose the latter as he preferred to serve TNAU. As first Dy. Director (Information), Prof. Vijayaraghavan lifted the institution’s image to greater heights. He played an active role in organizing the All India Agricultural University Vice-Chancellors’ Conference held at Madurai. His herculean accomplishment of having trained all the Panchayat Presidents and Extension Officers of Tamil Nadu for nearly two and a half long years is noteworthy. The mega Book Fair organised by him in TNAU recently and the novel activities related to publications and library are a testimony to his creative credentials. He has held editorial and honorary administrative positions in several national level professional organisations. He has visited Philippines and USA on separate academic assignments. Prof. Vijayaraghavan is widely recognized as an effective communicator and a public speaker par excellence. To summarize, innovative extension has been his trademark throughout his career. To honour the meritorious service of Prof. Vijayaraghavan a Farewell Function will be held on Sep. 3, 2014 (Wednesday) at 3.00 pm in the AV Lab of Dept of AE & RS, TNAU, Coimbatore. The programme will start with a Group Photo. All his well wishers are requested to grace the occasion and offer their felicitations. The charges for Tea + Memento will be Rs. 250/-, which may kindly be sent on or before Aug. 25, 2014 to: Dr. P. Balasubramaniam, Professor (Agrl. Extn.), Dept. of AE&RS, TNAU, Coimbatore.
